Victor Ludorum, winner of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and the Jean-Luc Lagardère Prize for André Fabre and Godolphin, has retired from competition and will be present at Haras du Logis in Normandy for 2022.

Godolphin’s national son Shamardal was one of three undefeated 2019 juvenile Group 1 winners for the late sire, alongside Pinatubo and Earthlight, who spent their first seasons at Darley’s Dalham Hall and Kildangan Stud respectively.

Unbeaten in three starts at two, in particular by facing the future winners of the Criterium International Alson and Armory at Longchamp, Victor Ludorum took advantage of his seasonal return to third in the Prix de Fontainebleau at three years old with great success in the Poule d’Essai des Poulain .

Also third behind Mishriff in the Prix du Jockey Club, Victor Ludorum won the Prix Messidor this season and also finished third behind Baaeed in the Prix du Moulin last month. The four-year-old has won five of his 14 starts and more than £ 670,000 in prizes.

Victor Ludorum is the fifth foal of the winning mare Kaldounevees and placed in the Antiquities group and a brother or half-brother to three winners, including third Irish Oaks winner Mary Tudor and double goalscorer Ancient History.

Sam Bullard, Darley’s stallion manager, said: “Victor Ludorum was a big credit to the Godolphin team – a Classic homebred winner who was exceptional at two years old.

“We are delighted to find him in France, the scene of all his races. He comes from a particularly exceptional stallion family and has every chance of being a great stallion son of Shamardal.”

Julian Ince added: “I am delighted that Darley has entrusted such a wonderful horse to Haras du Logis. And, of course, this is great for the French breeding community. Bred by Godolphin and masterfully trained by André Fabre, Victor Ludorum was a magnificent horse to watch.

“We were all so excited by him. A beautiful colt, with a fantastic pedigree – and such talent!

“Unbeaten together and brilliant in the Poule d’Essai, that’s exactly what his sire Shamardal achieved, and we hope that Victor Ludorum will perform equally well at stud.

Victor LudorumFees will be announced at a later date.
